Ngā Rohe Regions

The future prosperity of Kapa Haka and Māori wellbeing is dependant on sustained, intergenerational interest and participation. Te Matatini’s success is intimately tied to the development of our rohe. Our rohe make up the fundamental membership of Te Matatini Society and hence, provide an important link between our national body and the Kapa Haka communities which we serve.

Each rohe appoints a delegate onto the Te Matatini National Board. Their role is to represent the unique interests of their rohe at a national level. Further information about each Rohe is included in their pages below.

  • Te Arawa

    E mea ana te kōrero ko Maketū te Ihu, ko Rotorua te Takere, ko Taupō te Kei o te waka o Te Arawa, nō reira katoa ngā iwi, ngā hapū e noho ana kai waenganui i ēnei roherohenga ka whakapapa atu, ka hono atu ki te iwi o Te Arawa.

  • Te Tairāwhiti

    Tairawhiti stretches from Potikirua to Mohaka, it encompasses Ngati Porou, Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tamanuhiri, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Rongomaiwahine and Ngati Kahungunu ki te Wairoa.

  • Ngāti Kahungunu

    Ngāti Kahungunu Runanga Arts and Culture Board advocates for the arts, culture and heritage within the rohe of Ngāti Kahungunu iwi which has a geographical spread from Wharerata Ranges in Te Wairoa to the Remutaka Range in South Wairarapa.

    This rohe incapsulates the greater Manawatū, Horowhenua, Rangitīkei and Wairarapa ki Rangitāne. Tangata Rau is the senior regional competition that aligns with Te Matatini - Te Pītau Whakarei.

  • Te Whanganui Ā Tara

    Ko te Atiawa, ko Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ko Ngāti Raukawa Ki Muapoko, ki Rangitaane ki Kahunungu, Ki Te Wairarapa ki Kahungunu nga iwi. I tīmata mai te Wellington Maori Cultural Society I te tau 1963.

  • Waitaha

    Ngā Pākihi Whakatekateka o Waitaha Cultural Council, established 60 years ago, supports and promotes kapa haka and Māori performing arts across Waitaha, originally spanning from Kaikōura to Waimate but now including Ōtepoti and Murihiku.

  • Te Whenua Moemoeā

    The rohe of Te Whenuamoemoeā encompasses the whole of Australia which consists of 6 states and 2 territories. Australian based kapahaka have competed at every ATMPAS and Te Matatini since 1988.
