Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2022 – Whakanuia ngā tau rima tekau!
Rāhina te 12 o Mahuru 2022
MEDIA RELEASE
This year, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori celebrates Te Wiki o te Reo Māori from 12 – 18 September 2022 and on Wednesday 14 September, acknowledges 50 years since the Māori language petition was delivered to Parliament to gain active recognition of te reo Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand, and for the language to be taught in schools.
Te Matatini also celebrates 50 golden years of its national biennial kapa haka festival and the epitome of kapa haka excellence. He tiu, he raki.
“For te reo Māori to thrive, speakers of te reo and those that are learning need to be given opportunities to celebrate the language. Te Matatini provides the context for te reo Māori celebration and use to occur.” – Ngā Hua a Te Matatini: The benefits of kapa haka to Aotearoa.
“Kapa haka provides a space where the use of te reo Māori is normalised; it connects Māori to their cultural values and stories; it provides a pathway for educational achievement and keeps whānau healthy and well. The benefits of kapa haka infiltrate all aspects of our society”, says Te Heamana o Te Matatini, Mr Selwyn Parata.
Carl Ross, Te Manahautū o Te Matatini says, “Te Matatini creates the environment needed to achieve the goals of Te Maihi Māori (Māori language strategy developed by and for iwi, Māori and Māori language communities/stakeholders), and Te Maihi Karauna (Māori language strategy developed, with advice from Te Mātāwai, by the Crown).”
In April this year, Te Matatini launched a 50-song digital album, He Tau Makuru (The Abundant Year), as part of the 3-part 50-year celebration project, #TM50. To celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this week, and due to popular demand, Te Matatini is releasing the te reo Māori lyrics to 7 of the waiata from the He Tau Makuru album.
