Fifty golden years of Te Matatini book launch
Fifty golden years of kapa haka are beautifully captured in Te Matatini’s limited edition memoir He Tau Makuru, officially being launched on Tuesday.
Published by Te Huia publishers, He Tau Makuru will be unveiled, blessed and launched ahead of Day One (Wednesday, 22 February) of the Festival, and will be available for sale at the Te Matatini Hub in the Festival marketplace this week.
He Tau Makuru (The Abundant Year) is a chapter-by-chapter recollection of each festival from 1972 until now, through the eyes of key people involved.
“This memoir release is part of a one-of-a-kind project that includes the production of an album and a web series celebrating 50 years of kapa haka excellence,” Te Matatini Chief Executive Carl Ross says.
“Te Matatini is grateful to those who have shared their stories of the past fifty years. An expert team of researchers, writers and transcribers were assembled to assist in the drafting of the manuscript and the outcome is stunning.”
He Tau Makuru also features archival images from Alexander Turnbull Library Collections that celebrate key moments in Te Matatini history while honouring those who have passed on and their contributions to Te Matatini and kapa haka through a legacy dedication section.

In 2022, Te Matatini celebrated its 50th year of kapa haka. Due to COVID restrictions, the festival was postponed to 2023, where the 50th anniversary will be celebrated.
Te Matatini Herenga Waka Herenga Tangata 2023 takes place at Ngā Ana Wai Eden Park in Tāmaki Makaurau from 22 February to 25 February 2023. Tickets are available here.
