Te Matatini, in association with Tairawhiti rohe, is proud to be hosting Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival in Gisborne from 16 – 20 February 2011.
Tairawhiti has a long history of performance and presentation in both formal and informal situations of kapa haka. Their contribution to this art form from their storehouses of cultural knowledge and wisdom in haka, moteatea, poi, mau rakau, to composers of the like of Hinewahirangi, Enoka Te Pakaru, Te Rangipaia, Harata Tangikuku and in more recent times Moni Taumaunu, Tuini Ngawai, Henare Waitoa, Wiremu Kerekere, Ngoi Pewhairangi, Ngapo and Pimia Wehi has not only served the people among Tairawhiti but also Maoridom and the world.
Tairawhiti last hosted a national senior Maori performing arts festival 32 years ago in 1977. In 2011 Te Matatini Festival will be held in the natural amphitheatre landscapes of Wai o Hika Estate. Located approximately 6 km west of Gisborne, Wai o Hika is the venue for the annual rhythm and vines concert between Christmas and New Year.
