Te Matatini is responsible for fostering, developing and protecting traditional Māori performing arts in the pursuit of excellence. In meeting this purpose, Te Matatini provides funds and support each year for the development of kapa haka and to help lift the profile and professionalism of Māori performing arts. Te Matatini also supports Māori performing arts in schools, the South Pacific Arts Festival, exhibitions, wananga, and regional, national and international festivals and events.
As well as building strong relationships with government departments and Festival sponsors, Te Matatini also works with arts organisations and businesses to generate opportunities for growing and promoting Māori performing arts. In addition, we maintain relationships with 13 regional committees who coordinate kapa haka events and activities within their rohe. Te Matatini also works with representatives responsible for facilitating national events that include Taikura, the National Primary and National Secondary Schools Kapa and international events that are enhanced with representation of Māori performing arts excellence.
These relationships and the work undertaken by strategic alliances and Te Matatini ensures that Māori arts, and culture can be showcased and celebrated in New Zealand and overseas.
