Kapa Haka Development
Regional Development: Each year, Te Matatini allocates funding to the 13 rohe to actively promote and support Māori performing arts in their region. Regional activities may include:
National Primary and Secondary Schools Festivals: Primary and secondary schools kapa haka are a significant feeder source to future senior kapa haka development and continuity of the art form. While each rohe may support primary and secondary schools kapa haka as part of their regional activities, Te Matatini offers support at a national level through funding and “in kind” support e.g. provision of judges, judging support and promotional activities.
Taikura: A number of Taikura groups exist throughout New Zealand, providing a non-competitive element for Māori performing arts and a solid platform for maintaining and performing traditional kapa haka material. Te Matatini recognises the importance of these groups through supporting the Taikura Biennial Festival and promoting Taikura roopu and events throughout the year.
